A Quieter Way of Life

Silent Running alt

Required bits:
  • New quiet fan 12volt 80mm
  • T10 hex driver bit
  • A number 2 Phillips screwdriver
  • A 2-pin plug (very small odd size) to a 3-pin socket adaptor or just wire snips and a soldering iron if you have no option or like getting down and dirty.
 * Remember to take all the usual precautions for static electricity [See MV8800 manual page M-323 useful info here about opening the case etc]

* Danger of Death! For you and your MV so unplug everything!

 * Remember too that Bighare does not know what he is talking about so its your own fault if you try this! - Ed

Unplug everything and take it all apart

Remove 16screws from the mv.

Lift off base.

To get into the separate PSU compartment you need to remove 4 more screws (the four that are also visible from outside in their own holes in the base plate) these four screws have a different head to the other 16 and need a T10 hex driver bit or similar. [Could try a small screw driver and brute force or even go mad and use a hack saw to cut a large groove across the screw head so you can use an ordinary screwdriver… but remember … that way lies madness as it releases metal filings that can kill your MV by short circuiting the stuff inside… so perhaps better not…alt alt ]

There are four very large headed screws that hold the fan itself in place, these can be seen and unscrewed from the outside of the case.

That pesky socket

The fan uses a 2 pin socket, this is an odd very small one and not of a type that I have come across before, I thought I might have a connector to adapt to it but it was even smaller than that. So out came the soldering iron wire snips and insulating sleeving.
[You can make this connection in other ways if soldering is not something you know about, perhaps others will post some ideas on this?]

The fans cables are tied to others with a cable tie and this has to be cut to remove the fan. The fan I had bought came with some cable ties too, which was nice.

Out with the old and in with the new

There are lots to choose from at various prices, some do slow running tricks as options and some don’t 12volt 80mm case fitting,

The new fan

When shopping have a look at the fans specs for the decibel rating to compare them, but to be honest anything that says it is quiet will be a vast improvement on the MV’s original fan.
e.g.:-
  • Sharkoon Silent Eagle 80mm
  • Xilence Red Wing 80mm Quiet Fan
  • Acousti AcoustiFan: DustPROOF 80mm fan
I chose the Acousti as it was on offer, but there are many others.

Anti Vibes

The Acousti came with some “ultra soft anti vibration fan mounts” which is something I had not used before, they thread through the case holes and pull through the fans mounting holes, pull from inside the case and that’s it. This secures the fan without the need for the old screws and they seem to work… only problem was fitting the final one… you cannot see or reach it because the fan fits right up against the psu compartment wall and outside of the case... You can of course just fit the old screw back in it from outside the case if you have not got the patience.

 Put it all back together

Then it just remained to put it all back together and plug it in. The psu compartment lid has several screw holes in it so try to get those T10 head ones back in the right place! You can use the base as a guide and of course the base will not go back on if you have put them in the wrong place, so no real problem (I’m not saying how I know that of course.)

Once all back together it was time to plug it in and…. Shhh!? Can you hear that? No? Neither can I alt:)

The difference is total. I honestly can say that I can not hear the MV running at all now! Complete silence unless you put your ear to it. Several times I have had to check for the draft with my hand at the fan vent to be certain that the fan is running! But it is and there is quite a draft but no noise at all!

Excellent!

Some MVers have said they always wear headphones etc and the noise does not bother them, for me it was irritating as I don’t.
So, should you try it?  The only real difficulty is the cabling of the fan, if you are not able to use a soldering iron then you will have to find another way. You can take both the new fan and the old fan to someone you know who does solder stuff and get them to chop the wires and do it for you. There maybe be an adapter available to make the connection, perhaps someone could post the details if they know it?

Newsflash

The Tweetboard notifies you of new tweet activity since your last visit, it gives an instant visual prompt of a red tab to indicate that there are new tweets. Anyone with a twitter account can post via the Tweetboard, a link back to the corresponding conversation is appended to the tweet, and the blurb says, “ [Thus] creating a viral stream of traffic proportional to the volume of tweeting performed via your Tweetboard.” Mmmm? I’m not too sure what that actually means…. but there you go
