A Behringer U-Control UMX610

E-mail Print PDF

I bought a Behringer U-Control UMX610 midi keyboard mainly to use with the MV. Of course nothing is ever simple. I could not get it to work directly with the MV. If I plugged it straight into the MVs midi-in socket nothing happened, no midi signal shows [MV has a little flashing led to show activbity], just silence. Yet if I routed the keyboard through my PC first, not changing anything else, it worked fine? I started to think that the keyboard might not produce a high enough signal level for the MV or something?

The manual says that when the UMX is not linked via USB to a computer, “it is automatically set to stand-alone mode. In this case, the UMX can only send out MIDI data from its MIDI OUT connector.”

Which is what I was doing but it was still not working that way?

After searchihng the web and posting on the mvnation.com forum I found the answer in of all places an online store reviewer of another keyboard in the same range a UMX25 at zzounds where the reviewer says,

”I was surprised that even with batteries you need a power adapter to use the midi out cable instead of the USB.”

Which was the answer. Nowhere in the manual does it say that to use the midi out by itself requires the power adaptor to be in use, and of course the power adaptor does not come with the keyboard, it is sold separately, the keyboard uses internal batteries and or can take its power from the usb connection when using that.

Anyway  I finally got my hands on a psu of the correct spec and midi out worked as expected.  Behringer need to get better manual writers. The keyboard is sold as being capable of being standalone, but without the power supply it is not.
